Constipation and Fever

by Miki
(Terrell, TX)

My 20 month old son hasn't pooped in 3 and a half days and also has had a fever for that long, is something seriously wrong?

It is now Monday morning, my son spiked a fever on late afternoon Thursday (Thanksgiving). At first I thought it might be teething cuz his nose is a little runny, no diarrhea, no vomiting. He's eating but not much.

What concerns me is the day he spiked the fever is also the last day he pooped. Does anybody have any idea what could be the issue and what I can do at HOME to fix it?

Unlikely NEW
by: Heather ;-)

It is unlikely that the fever is being caused by the constipation.

Fevers are the result of the body trying to get rid of an infection of some sort. Constipation can cause an infection, if there's a rupture, but since it's only been 3 days that's unlikely.

First, read through these suggestions for handling a fever. Your #1 enemy here will be dehydration.

Give him some prune juice in some milk, avoid cheeses and other binders, or try some of my loosening-up tips for constipation.

These are my thoughts, but I'm not a doctor. If you're really worried, call your local hospital for a nurse's advice, or contact your pediatrician.

We've all agonized over a child's poop at some time or another. You feel so helpful, just praying those little intestines will start to move!!

If he starts really screaming, drawing his feet in to his tummy, or the fever gets above 103, call your doctor.

I hope this can help!
