What are the Best Baby Monitors?

by Alicia

I'm having my first child this Christmas and the one item i have not been able to figure out is which is the best baby monitor. I was wondering what you suggest, I'm looking for something relatively affordable, possibly with the visual monitor. Any suggestions would be great, Thank you!

I'm happy to see you post this question here. I did respond to your personal email on August 9th. If you didn't get my response, PLEASE let me know so I can follow up with my email provider.

Here's the short version of what that email said:

I'm pretty cheap, so we purchased this Summer Monitor for under $100. The first time we purchased it, the monitor lasted about a year and then went. The second time it's lasted almost 2 and is still going strong. (The first time I dropped it, so that may have been my clumsiness more than the product.)

Pros - it does night vision, I can do video with no sound, or no video with sound. The camera from the first monitor works with the second, so now we use both cameras on different wavelengths. This has been great at catching my then-3 year old getting out of bed. (She thinks I have magic powers to spot her, which is fun.)

Cons - pretty clunky. It's like a tape player next to an ipod. ;-) My house is fairly small, and so I generally plug it in and leave it, glancing at it every now and then. However, when Bella was really young (few weeks/months) I would carry it up stairs, plug it in while I was doing laundry or something and then have to carry it back downstairs - which is a pain.

If you don't mind those inconveniences, it's really not a bad monitor for the money. If you're moving around the house a lot, a smaller handheld, battery-powered monitor that fits in your pocket would be a lot easier. My sister-in-law uses this one and loves it. Next baby, if our current monitor goes whacko, I'd probably choose that one.

One more thing - several models of baby monitors were recalled last year after a few children died after being strangled with the cords (very tragic). Here are the recall details, fyi. It's really not a product problem, it's more of a usage
issue. So whichever one you used, make sure that the cords are well out of reach. You'll be surprised at how far a baby can reach when they want to explore something.

My video is attached the wall several feet above the crib, with the wire going over the top of the door, rather than hanging down where Isabella can fiddle with it.

Please feel to post more questions/thoughts here! I hope this is helpful.

My baby refused all bottles until you showed me the MAM bottle. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I wouldn't have known about them if not for your website.
